DuPont, with headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, is a premier multi-industrial company and innovation leader with technology-based materials and solutions that help transform industries and everyday life around the globe.
DuPont has been recognized by its customers and consumers alike for delivering essential innovations in key markets including electronics, water, protection, next-generation auto, healthcare, and industrial technologies. With a history of industry-leading innovation and iconic brands such as Kevlar®, Tyvek® and Nomex®, DuPont is known as a trusted and experienced leader.

DuPont has an ambitious digitalization program until 2030 to:
  • Safely provide energy and usage data that will enable improved reliability programs and help measure the targeted reduction of CO2 emissions by 30%.
  • Collect data from the field devices, connect them with the higher supervision system and store on-premise.
  • Access the substation data remotely.
  • Implement a diagnostic/ assets management too.
  • Speed up fault identification and diagnosis.
  • Ensure data visualization and state-of-the-art documentation.

The challenge of this project was to execute it during the COVID-19 pandemic having most of the technical clarifications, alignment, FAT and even commissioning remotely or partially remotely.

An additional challenge for Siemens was to install a minimum of communication-capable devices in the switchgear already in production, without affecting data acquisition requirements, in order to collect the necessary data to achieve a satisfactory result.
Development and implementation of a digitalization concept of a substation with SIMARIS control, a Siemens Xcelerator software tool, at the Maydown Kevlar® plant consisted of:
  • 8DJH 11 kV; 25 kA (1s); 630 A switchgear
  • 3 GEAFOL 11 kV / 433 V; 2,000 kVA transformers
  • 2x SIVACON S8 – LV 400 V distribution boards

SIMARIS control has provided an intuitive interface to support control operation, basic parameterization, and analytical functions of power distribution assets using just one central panel, facilitating easy access for data acquisition and allowing remote access to field devices.

Installation of intelligent devices such as: protection relays, metering devices and providing communication to LV breakers.
“This project has significantly improved the electrical safety associated with operating distribution equipment, while giving increased visibility on electrical power usage, which will enable us to better analyze our downstream users and identify opportunities for sustainability improvements. The installation was safely designed, built and commissioned during the COVID-19 pandemic and with no incidents or losses to production. A great team effort.”
John Friel – Project Team Leader, DuPont
100% of the Maydown Kevlar® plant power is distributed via the new substation.

- Digitalization of the Maydown substation with SIMARIS control, an advanced monitoring system, to obtain:
  • Transparency of electrical assets and their parameters.
  • Intuitive interface to support control operation, basic parameterization, and analytical functions of power distribution assets.
  • Fast fault identification and diagnosis.
  • On-premise data storage.
  • Documentation repository.

- Integration of the existing IED’s at the field level for data acquisition, graphical representation and control functions.
- OPC server for flexible data acquisition from the SIMARIS control system to:
  • Display in the customer plant central control room.
  • Record history and combine data with the plant historian, Honeywell.

There was minimal distribution to the project schedule and the work was completed without any incidents.
