The Kuhwerder substation supplies large parts of the port area in the southern part of Hamburg with electricity and ensures the power supply for predominantly commercial customers in large parts of the port area. Starting in 2025, the facility will also take over the shore power supply for the CC3 Steinwerder cruise terminal.

To ensure supply security in the future, the operator Hamburger Energienetze decided on a comprehensive modernization of the substation. In addition to the two transformers that step down the voltage from 110 kV to 10 kV, Hamburger Energienetze is also renewing the 10 kV switchgear, which consists of two busbars with 54 fields of the NXPLUS C24 blue GIS type. After the modernization, the substation will be able to provide an electrical power of up to 37.5 MVA. It is designed to continue operating even if one of the transformers or one of the two busbars fails.
