The Siemens Elektromotorenwerk in Bad Neustadt an der Saale is an electric motor factory and the Siemens lighthouse factory for Siemens Digital Enterprise applications in metalworking. In order to position the maintenance department as key experts in supplying the needed services for an Industrie 4.0 factory, the management needed to assess the current maintenance works and processes. With the assessment there was an additional strong focus on how the implement digitalization for maintenance.
Siemens Industry Services offers Plant Maintenance Services to provide expert support for a plants maintenance team and unique asset management solutions. Plant Maintenance Services contains Maintenance Consulting, Maintenance Services and Maintenance Outsourcing.

With the assessment tool Maintenance Benchmark Review (MBR) our maintenance consultants assessed current state of the maintenance management processes with strong focus on digitalization and define areas for improvement.

With the help of the assessment results the Siemens service experts were able to create a customized Maintenance Improvement Program (MIP) for the motor factory. The key focus was to optimize the classical maintenance processes and activities by using suitable digitalization approaches. Therefore the following sub-projects were executed:

  • Maintenance processes and KPIs: Definition of efficient maintenance processes with the focus on mobile maintenance and individual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Mobile Maintenance approach: Execution of a structured research and testing of different mobile maintenance solutions which can support the maintenance team in managing future workload.
  • Condition Monitoring: Provision of a blue print requirement specification for a suitable condition monitoring approach from a maintenance view, as a basis for all CNC machines.
  • Remote Services: Implementation of pilot remote services to support an intercompany cross site communication and that service experts can support teams directly cross factory.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Optimization of preventive maintenance processes to be able to manage future workload, conducted "before" and "after" SMED Workshop (Single Minutes of Exchange of Die).
  • Failure Analysis: Implementation of a suitable failure analysis tool to analyze machine faults more efficiently.

All the requirement specifications should be turned into real life solutions in the next few months.
As a result of the Maintenance Improvement Program (MIP) the maintenance team of the motor factory in Bad Neustadt is - with the help of the provided maintenance know how, the documentation and processes - now in the position to successfully drive their digital transformation from a maintenance perspective.
