Evaluation of surface-water-quality is generally done by manual sampling and analysis in specific laboratories. Such evaluations are done roughly once per one or two months. It is evident that this frequency does not give evidence about hazardous events, daily or weekly changes of water quality etc. 

EU-Framework Water Directive Goal requests EU member states to achieve good ecological and chemical status of their water bodies until 2027.Croatia as youngest EU member state has started an ambitious program to meet EU regulations and improve public infrastructure in a short period of time
Developing a system for “SoftSensor Based Online Monitoring of Surface Water Quality”

  • Sensors measuring online specific water quality parameters, based on physical principles (e.g. UV-Vis-Spectrometry)    

  • Remote Control Technology to control and connect measured data from local level to cloud level

  • Siemens MindSphere Cloud Platform where online-data can be easily displayed e.g. in line-charts, value widgets and gantt diagrams 

  • A SoftSensor computing several directly and indirectly measured parameters and making water quality transparent in a single “Water Quality Index”
  • MindSphere solution with cloud-based access to all involved parties and secure hosting of data

  • Online measurement of water specific parameters like COD, BOD, NO2, colour etc. 

  • Transparent visualization of complex data via SoftSensoring 

  • Water Quality Index gives a transparent output and therefore a better understanding of specific water quality situations and opportunities to manage related processes e.g. for hazardous events, river basin management etc.
The pilot sensor station is situated close to the city of Knin at the river Krka just downstream of an industrial facility producing metal products. The station is equipped with sensors to measure water quality paramaters like Chemical Oxygen Demand, Nitrate, Turbidity or Colour online. Data is transmitted directly to the Siemens cloud platform MindSphere and converted into a specific Water Quality Index for this river and region. Connecting to MindSphere one can get an easy overview of the recent water quality and define furhter activties.
