The first prototype of grinding machine, where linear motors are used instead of mechanical axis movement in order to achieve maximum grinding accuracy even when grinding large workpiece diameters. The basis of the system is Sinumerik 840Dsl, SINAMICS S120 inverters and SIMOTICS linear motors. The biggest challenge was the absolutely precise positioning and adjustment of the linear motor in the Z-axis in the length of 9 meters.

The biggest benefit is the minimization of mechanical wear of the whole machine. Replacing the ball screw with a linear motor is initially more costly but it will bring savings in long-term operation. The machine maintains the highest possible machining accuracy throughout its life without the need to replace mechanical parts.
