Belgotech, a Belgian company specialized in the construction of switchboards, provides the electrical part of a machine for the disinfection of medical waste on behalf of its customer Ecosteryl. In practice, this involves the decontamination of all equipment used in an operating room or hospital, as this treatment to eliminate bacteria is essential before the destruction of medical waste. The effective disinfection is done using microwaves and the machine is used worldwide. Belgotech therefore needed a solution to be able to carry out interventions remotely, for example for commissioning, maintenance work or troubleshooting.
The major challenges for the realization of such a machine: - To meet stringent industrial quality requirements - In addition, this machine is intended to be exported all over the world, which means that all local requirements must be met, with therefore a device always compatible with these prescriptions.
- being able to act remotely to help with commissioning, but also to carry out troubleshooting and maintenance operations.

Belgotech has used the TIA Portal engineering platform from Siemens, a Simatic HMI Comfort Panel interface and Sinamics G120C frequency converters for web-based remote management. These AC drives are typically used by machine builders (OEMs) because of their compactness, high performance and extensive functionality. The compactness of this AC drive means that its dimensions are optimized for machines such as those used by Ecosteryl. The integration functions in the TIA Portal platform ensure simple and effective control of the frequency converter. And thanks to the possibility to use safety functions, for example the STO function (Safe Torque off), the user can protect his machine from the operators. Via the PROFINET interface, the AC drive can also communicate with this protocol and exchange efficiency and status information with the PLC, which is crucial for energy optimization and plant maintenance. This solution makes it very easy to operate electrical elements via an interface.

This integrated concept where everything is included in the Siemens programming interface allows remote access to all the elements of the electrical cabinet, and from there to obtain a diagnosis and carry out troubleshooting also remotely, via the internet.
