WattsUp Power was searching for a reliable business partner with experience that can offer a solution that fits specific needs in order to make green energy solutions for storaging energy in Flywheels to use in marine business. Wattsup Power has specific demands regarding efficiency of drives. Furthermore, the size was an important factor for the customer.
As the customer was looking for a long-lasting and ecologically sustainable solution, Siemens service experts offered the SINAMICS S120 inverters in combination with the SINAMICS Technology Extension AMB (Active Magnetic Bearing). This technology can be used for Flywheels, which were chosen in the process due to being very energy efficient, providing efficient and long-lasting energy storage. These Flywheels are used without oil and with no friction via active magnetic bearings, due to relying on a magnetic field. With this SINAMICS Technology Extensions a customized SINAMICS converter for the required task can be created. The SINAMICS S120 inverters and controllers provide a proven and highly reliable system. Products provided by Siemens service experts include: 
  • SINAMICS S120 inverter. 
  • SINAMICS Control Unit CU320-2.
  • SINAMICS Technology Extension AMB (Active Magnetic Bearing).
  • Customized Cabinets.
Flywheels are associated with several benefits, such as energy efficiency and long-lasting energy storage. In addition to this, the Flywheels work without chemical components. The customer now owns a long-lasting system with high reliability. Due to the adaptability, the cabinets were tailored by Siemens WKC factory to the customer’s wishes and were supplied in the smallest size possible. In addition to this, Siemens service experts respond quick via remote services to support costumer on-site. Other benefits include: 
  • Lower maintenance costs. 
  • Low Power Loss < 1%.
  • Up to 50.000 rotations. 
  • Maximum output power is 1 MW.
  • Siemens solutions have - in earlier projects - proven as reliant and durable. 
  • Siemens experts respond quick to changes from the customer.
