The energy transition places new demands on transmission system operators: sustainability, regulatory compliance and technological future‑proofing must go hand in hand. For 50Hertz Transmission GmbH (hereinafter "50Hertz"), this requires taking early steps toward SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear and preparing today for the regulatory framework expected to come into force in 2030, without compromising operational safety or performance.
Together with Siemens AG (hereinafter "Siemens"), 50Hertz implemented an innovative pilot installation at the Gnewitz substation based on the SF₆‑free blue GIS technology 8DAB 40. Already in the early project phase, the technology and its benefits were demonstrated during initial discussions in the blue GIS Showtruck. The installation comprises three panels of the 8DAB 40 – blue GIS series: one disconnector panel (incoming feeder) and two circuit-breaker panels (outgoing feeders), fully integrated into the existing infrastructure. With this, 50Hertz sends a clear signal for technological innovation and a future‑proof grid infrastructure.
By completely eliminating SF₆ and utilizing Clean Air as the insulating medium, the switchgear avoids operational F-gas emissions compared to conventional SF₆-insulated installations, while providing long-term investment security. By deploying the technology early, 50Hertz is gathering operational experience under real conditions a foundation for later standardization and scaling.
