In the past, the structure was highly complex. There was a duplicate network with separate switches and routers. The entire system frequently failed if malfunctions occurred. Siemens took over the planning and implementation of the new network control system for the traction power supply. To manage the rail network, a solution was sought that detects faults, accelerates network recovery and ensures reliable power supply throughout the rail network.
Siemens offered a solution consisting of two Layer-3 switches that allow flexible and fast adjustment of the network structures. Thanks to the redundant configuration, both RUGGEDCOM RX1500 form a logical unit. If one of the switches fails, the other takes over the gateway function immediately.

The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGBahn) is one of the largest transit companies in Switzerland. With more than eight million passengers per year, the company is an important infrastructure service provider for regional tourism. In a project, the network infrastructure with older equipment is to be replaced by a new power management system for traction power supply with modern components.
