During the modernization of an inner-city wastewater pumping station, AZV Oyten-Ottersberg had to comply with the energy supplier's requirement for a THDu (Total Harmonic Distortion of Voltage) value for the wastewater pump converters of less than 8%. The local conditions required compact-design components in order to keep the outdoor control cabinet as small as possible. The converter operation of the pumps needed to be consistently reliable, (energy) efficient, and also cyber-secure, as the pumping station is part of the critical infrastructure (KRITIS). In addition, simple installation, commissioning, operation, and service were also required.
The planners of john becker ingenieure (jbi) were informed early on about the possible deployments and advantages of the SINAMICS G220 Clean Power and were supported by Siemens with their first operation, involving a drive specialist from the very beginning. In addition to three SINAMICS G220 Clean Power (15 kW/400 V) converters, the automation solution set up by Elektro Eggersincludes a Simatic S7-1200 controller, ET200SP distributed I/O, and a Scalance X Industrial Ethernet switch for local and remote access. The Clean Power technology reduces undesirable internal harmonics in the converters, which saves external compensatory measures, and thus also costs and space in the outdoor control cabinet. The side-by-side mounting of the SINAMICS G220 also contributes to the reduced control cabinet width. The converters feature extensive on-board cybersecurity functions by default.

The SINAMICS G220 Clean Power (CP) converters with reduced harmonics significantly reduce the control cabinet width – in this case by around 800 mm or 30% compared to the originally planned solution with separate compensation. This increases acceptance by residents. Final measurements on the system confirm the effect of the Clean Power technology: a THDu value of less than 2% is achieved in the field, which is well below the energy supplier's target of 8%. Converter operation is more energy and cost-efficient, and also more gentle on the grid and the system than classic operation with star-delta starting (which was designed redundantly for availability reasons). With integrated cybersecurity functions, the SINAMICS G220 Clean Power complies with relevant guidelines and standards such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), IEC 62443, and Directive 2022/2555 (NIS-2). The CP devices are quickly and reliably commissioned using the familiar tools from Siemens and diagnosed via a web server.
