The City of Essen wanted to thoroughly modernize the climate control and building services systems at its Town Hall in order to significantly reduce energy consumption, CO₂ emissions, and operating costs. It was important to find a solution that would pay for itself quickly and could be implemented without interrupting operations.

• Analysis of the existing systems in the Town Hall by Siemens
• Development of a detailed space allocation plan to optimize the indoor climate
• Replacement of five main air conditioning units with energy-efficient, heat-recovery-equipped full-range air conditioning systems
• Installation of new control systems and building automation technology
• Replacement of 3,106 recirculating air heating/cooling units
• Integration of the systems into the Desigo CC building management system for smart control
• Implementation during ongoing operations without interrupting administrative activities

Siemens modernized the HVAC and building systems at Essen Town Hall as part of an energy-saving contracting project. Thanks to energy-efficient systems, smart building automation, and new control technology, the city of Essen was able to reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 2,700 metric tons annually and save over €1 million per year in energy and operating costs. The project received the European Energy Service Award in 2019.
