DB Cargo UK sought to upgrade its fleet of material handling machines to more efficiently load and unload aggregates from its freight trains.
DB Cargo UK approached Liebherr Great Britain for a solution. The construction equipment manufacturer proposed seven LH 40 material handlers.
This represented a significant investment, potentially requiring a large upfront payment well before delivery and use of the equipment.
Siemens Financial Services (SFS), a global Liebherr partner, provided a revolving line of credit for the LH 40s.
The facility enables DB Cargo UK to lease the machines for up to five years, with a 12-month drawdown window for each machine delivery.
Strong expected residual values, approved by SFS’ expert Asset Management Specialists, reduce DB Cargo UK’s monthly rental payments.
Through close collaboration with SFS and Liebherr, we invested in HVO‑compatible machinery that supports our net‑zero goals.

Unloading around 1,000 tonnes of aggregates now takes roughly two hours and eliminates about 50 Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) movements per train.
The LH 40 reduces fuel consumption by up to 20% and is compatible with Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil (HVO), an alternative bio-based fuel that reduces carbon emissions.
SFS’ facility allows DB Cargo UK to align machine costs with income. For Liebherr, it secured a multi‑unit order that may otherwise have been delayed or phased.
Part of Germany’s DB Schenker Group, DB Cargo UK is one of the UK’s largest rail freight companies. Handling over 36 million tonnes per year, DB Cargo employs more than 2,200 people in its UK business and uses almost 230 diesel and electric locomotives to efficiently haul its range of cargoes – from cereals to coal – around the country.
