Increased LNG plant availability with Drive Train Analytics
Transportation
Equinor
In northern Europe - where Equinor production facility is located - customers need solutions which are able to operate in arctic temperatures and under rapidly changing operating conditions. That's why the customers electric drive train needs to be manufactured for the specific conditions prevailing in the arctic region and be designed for ambient temperatures down to -22 degrees.
Operational reliability is highly critical, any downtime results in serious losses for the customer. Therefore, Equinor is highly motivated to exploit all means of predictive maintenance and condition based monitoring. Siemens provides maintenance services for Hammerfest LNG for many years. The services are based on revisions made every three years and data evaluation from the condition monitoring system running on-site. Since the commissioning in 2007, the Siemens Service experts faced a series of various minor and major drive train incidents, which have resulted in numerous unplanned downtimes. Out of that observation, the idea of implementing Drive Train Analytics (DTA) was born. With DTA the customer should be able to increase the drive train availability, by reducing the number and severity of unplanned downtimes through instantaneous technical support and predictive maintenance, and extending planned service intervals (preventive inspection/maintenance).
Drive Train Analytics (DTA) concept:
Cloud-based analysis of the complete drive trains in one single system
Real-time status transparency based on dashboards
Automated alerts and reports
DTA Basic:
Automated continuous condition monitoring makes it possible to detect changes in the operating states early and to take according counter-measures
Simulation via Digital Twin, in order to quickly assess the drive train condition and detect problems at an early stage of their development and provide precise diagnosis/plan necessary activities
Central customer dashboard to monitor and access asset history data
Siemens owns the necessary experience and expert know-how to design, build, analyze and maintain the entire drive trains reaching from transformer over harmonic filters, converter and motors up to a compressor. The customer operates four compressor trains used in various stages in the gas liquefaction process including CO2 re-injection. In the first project phase, an online data collector and DTA was installed, on one compressor drive train (1 x 65MW). In the second project phase DTA will be installed/extended on the other three compressor drive trains (1 x 65MW, 1 x 32MW and 1 x 16MW).
„218 days in continuous production. This is a worldwide
record. For us Siemens is a trusted partner”

Possibility to extend the regular cycles of planned shut downs from three to four years
Reducing direct cost for maintenance and down-time
Higher availability, reduced planned and unplanned downtimes
Enhanced Drive Train Analytics based on real customer requirements
