Implementation of a comprehensive modernization and upgrade program for the legacy SIMATIC PCS 7 system, including:
SIMATIC Virtualization as a Service

Virtualization of operator stations, engineering stations, OS servers, and BATCH servers.
Migration to a modern, centralized virtual infrastructure based on Hyper-V technology.

SIMATIC PCS 7 Upgrade & Modernization

Upgrade of the process control system from SIMATIC PCS 7 V7.1 SP4 to PCS 7 V10 SP1 Update 1.
Operation and administration of a modern Windows Server infrastructure based on Windows Server 2022
Replacement of the legacy PTE400 library with Siemens Advanced Process Library (APL).

Hardware Modernization

Replacement of existing AS412, AS416 and AS417 controllers with modern AS410-5H redundant controllers.
Modernization of the industrial network infrastructure using latest-generation SCALANCE components.

Cybersecurity Enhancements

Implementation of front-end and back-end firewall concepts.

Working with Siemens enabled Evonik Operations GmbH, Steinau Site, to reduce lifecycle and maintenance costs through the modernization and standardization of its automation environment. By replacing obsolete hardware and software, implementing virtualization, and upgrading the process control system, Evonik gained a more reliable, scalable, and future-ready platform. The project also strengthened cybersecurity with modern network segmentation and firewall concepts, while simplifying maintenance and improving system recovery through virtual machine technology.

The Evonik Steinau production site has been in operation since 1956, originally as REWO, and was integrated into Evonik in 2007. Located in Steinau, Germany, the facility is part of Evonik's Business Line Care Solutions, producing specialty chemicals. The site features large-scale chemical processing infrastructure including reactors, storage tanks, and advanced process control systems.
