In the automated packaging of tablets, it is crucial that both pharmaceutical quality standards are maintained and machines are used as effectively as possible. Periods of non-production generally have a negative impact on profitability. A distinction must be made between unavoidable and avoidable downtime. Only by taking a very detailed look at downtimes and their causes can the performance and quality of the packaging lines be assessed and subsequently improved. An operational data acquisition system based on OEE/LEAN concepts provides the necessary transparency.

The solution based on SIMATIC WinCC V8 and PM-ANALYZE enabled the implementation of a highly flexible and powerful system for acquiring production data for the packaging lines. Data is automatically imported from the machines (e.g., machine statuses, counters, fault information). Manual user input has been reduced to a minimum. When analyzing the data, users can view the raw data and key figures for individual orders as well as entire campaigns, gaining information for system optimization.
