The increasing digitization of the network control center presents Hertener Stadtwerke with new challenges in the area of cybersecurity. In particular, data traffic between network control center and substations must be continuously monitored and protected against potential attacks. At the same time, there is no necessary transparency about safety-related events during network operation. Against this background, there was a requirement to implement a solution that would identify cyberthreats at an early stage and enable suitable countermeasures without setting up your own specialized security structures.
To enhance cybersecurity in the grid control center, Hertener Stadtwerke and Siemens implemented a Managed Detection & Response (MDR) system for continuous monitoring of network operations. The solution enables real-time analysis of data traffic between the grid control center and substations, helping to identify anomalies at an early stage and respond effectively to potential cyberthreats. An advanced cybersecurity approach was implemented that goes beyond traditional threat detection and actively supports risk mitigation measures.
Project scope: • Implementation of a Managed Detection & Response (MDR) system for the grid control center • Continuous monitoring and analysis of network traffic • Detection of anomalies and potential cyberattacks • Automated assessment of security-related events • Support in initiating appropriate countermeasures • Integration into existing operational and control systems • Early adoption of an MDR approach in the grid control center environment
• Enhanced grid control centersecurity • Early detection of cyberattacks • No need for additional in-house cybersecurity resources • Improved visibility into network operations • Increased operational reliability of the infrastructure • Practical implementation of an innovative cybersecurity approach for critical infrastructures
