For over 170 years, Katholische Kliniken im Märkischen Kreis (KKiMK - "Catholic Hospitals in the district Märkischer Kreis") have provided high-quality medical care. With three hospitals, several long-term care facilities, specialized centers, and around 35,000 patients per year, they offer a wide range of healthcare services. To ensure patient comfort and reliable 24/7 care, KKiMK relies on a secure, efficient, and future-proof building infrastructure.

Challenge: reliable building infrastructure
For KKiMK, patient care is the top priority. This requires a reliable building infrastructure to ensure that sensitive areas - such as operating rooms or intensive care units - can operate safely 24/7.

Cost pressure and new cybersecurity requirements - such as The European Union's Network and Information Security Directive (NIS 2 Directive) - are increasing the need for action.

Together with Siemens, KKiMK is driving digitalization with Building X. The cloud-based platform consolidates data from different systems in a single dashboard to increase transparency, improve efficiency, and enable faster responses. Building X provides the basis for new apps and services to digitize core hospital processes.
One example is the optimization of waste disposal processes: Sensors are used to digitally monitor the fill levels of trash bins, which are then clearly displayed on a dashboard in Building X. The goal: to avoid unnecessary emptying and make the waste disposal process more efficient.
As building systems become more interconnected, cybersecurity is becoming increasingly important. KKiMK is therefore working with Siemens on an ISO 27001-based gap assessment to identify cyber risks, assess the current security status, define actions to meet the requirements of the NIS 2 Directive and Germany's Critical Infrastructure Umbrella Act (KRITIS-Dachgesetz)".
