The
German IT Security Act and the KRITIS regulation
of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI),
which went into effect in early May 2016, impose entirely new requirements on
the operators of critical infrastructures, which includes waterworks above a
certain size. Hence, the Kreiswerke Grevenbroich needed a comprehensive security assessment to develop a security concept.
Due
to the specific requirements in industrial environments, Kreiswerke
Grevenbroich decided to hire Siemens to inspect the existing and new systems as
part of an Industrial Security Assessment pursuant to ISO 27001 which is based on the leading standard for information security management systems.
The
findings obtained from the completed Industrial Security Assessment were
recorded in a final report and led to specific proposals for improvement as
well as new concepts, such as the implementation of an Industrial Next Generation Firewall.
Kreiswerke
Grevenbroich GmbH supplies drinking water to more than 200,000 people in the Rhein-Neuss
District. For
many years the company has been operating three in-house waterworks in the
nearby region and also purchases water from a partner.
