To better understand the dietary impact on metabolism, researchers use room respiration calorimeters to measure energy expenditure via oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2) during controlled dietary interventions.
MEI Research, a leading provider of whole-body respiration calorimeters, supplies sealed rooms with one gas inlet and one gas outlet to monitor the O2 and CO2 flow rates for accurate metabolic analysis.
MEI required highly sensitive, reliable, and precise gas analyzers to improve the design and construction of their calorimeters.

The ULTRAMAT/OXYMAT 6 gas analyzers form the core of the sensing system and are central to MEI’s flagship solution. Integrated into the respiration calorimeter rooms, they enable highly precise VO₂ and VCO₂ monitoring by measuring gas inflow and outflow.
ULTRAMAT 6 uses non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) dual-beam differential measurement to selectively detect gases with absorption bands between 2 and 9 µm. It can be configured to measure CO, CO₂, NO, SO₂, NH₃, H₂O, CH₄, and other hydrocarbons.
OXYMAT 6 uses a paramagnetic alternating pressure method to measure oxygen with ±50 ppm accuracy, and even more with support from Siemens process instrumentation engineers. Its measurement range is adjustable for further applications like normobaric hypoxia.
