The N‑ERGIE Netz GmbH, as the regional distribution network operator, ensures a secure and reliable power supply in the Nuremberg metropolitan region. To meet increasing demands on network capacity, supply security and future viability, the company is continuously modernizing its grid infrastructure. An important element of this program is the renewal of the medium‑voltage switchgear at substation U5 Horneckerweg in Nuremberg, a central supply node for the northern part of the city.
The existing installation dates from 1969 and has reached the end of its technical service life. In addition, the substation is being reinforced, requiring additional bays capable of carrying a higher operating current. A particular challenge for this project is that the power supply must be maintained throughout the entire construction period. For this reason, the modernization is being carried out in two consecutive construction phases.
In the first phase, part of the new medium‑voltage switchgear will be installed and commissioned. This allows supply responsibilities to be transferred to the new equipment step by step. In the second phase, the remaining parts of the installation will be renewed. This approach makes it possible to keep the installation continuously in operation during construction and to guarantee supply security at all times.
The multi‑stage implementation places high demands on the planning, coordination and execution of the measures. At the same time, it offers the decisive advantage that the extension and renewal of the installation can be carried out without interruptions to supply. In doing so, N‑ERGIE Netz lays the foundation for a long‑term secure, reliable and future‑proof grid operation at the Horneckerweg site.
New medium‑voltage switchgear 8DAB24 - blue GIS with double busbar (50 fields), divided into two construction phases.
A special milestone: N‑ERGIE Netz GmbH received the 200,000th field of the Siemens 8DAB series, manufactured at the new 8DAB Center in Frankfurt.
Clean Air as the insulating medium consists of gases of natural origin and contains no SF6 or other F‑gases.
New protection technology SIPROTEC 5 (7SX85).
Delivery and installation on customer‑provided base frames as well as raised floor in the existing building.
Commissioning using StationScout to simulate the interlocking of the second section of the installation.
The first construction phase was commissioned in spring 2026. Delivery and completion of the second construction phase are scheduled for spring 2027.
We are gradually converting the medium‑voltage systems in our grid area to F‑gas‑free operation and are pleased to have Siemens as a strong and reliable regional partner at our side.
