The Red Bull Arena faced the challenge of installing and unifying a comprehensive and coherent security system for its large floor area of 28,800 square meters across four levels. The aim was to equip the arena with state-of-the-art technology. The desired 'all-inclusive' security package was to include the following components:
Automatic and manual fire detectors
A multifunctional public address system (including loudspeakers for evacuation announcements and background music)
Precise video surveillance systems for indoor and outdoor areas
The overarching goal was the implementation of a holistic security solution, with the sheer size and complexity of the building posing a particular challenge. Another strategic objective was to ensure that the installed systems met the high demands of the stadium's versatile use (e.g., for football matches, concerts, and motocross events) and guaranteed maximum availability at all times. Ultimately, the highest level of security was to be provided to all over 30,000 spectators in the arena.
Siemens has comprehensively met all these requirements and delivered a customized security solution. As part of this project, the following security-related systems were installed:
A total of over 1,100 automatic and manual fire detectors for comprehensive monitoring of the arena.
A multifunctional public address system with approximately 640 loudspeakers, which can be used for fire alarm messages, evacuation instructions, calming and all-clear announcements, as well as for general information and background music. Important information is prioritized (e.g., a fire alarm announcement always takes precedence over less critical messages). The impact of varying visitor numbers on the sound reinforcement result has been significantly reduced, and the sound system can be adapted to different event conditions at any time.
The indoor sound system and fire alarm system were also installed as part of the VIP club expansion.
The entire signal management is handled via a digital, Ethernet-based audio network, which enables a decentralized and building-wide expansion of the system.
Precise video surveillance that can recognize and identify the faces of over 30,000 spectators. For this purpose, 45 cameras are equipped with infrared, 36x optical motorized zoom, and even 16x digital zoom. The processor-controlled video surveillance system is networked with various other systems in the arena via data interfaces.
A professional video surveillance system monitors both the interior and exterior areas (e.g., the over 2,000 parking spaces).
With this complex and integrated solution from Siemens, a maximum level of security is ensured in the Red Bull Arena.
Through Siemens' "all-inclusive" security package, the Red Bull Arena benefits from a multitude of crucial advantages:
Maximum security for all present: Comprehensive protection for over 30,000 spectators, staff, and artists is ensured at all times.
Effective emergency response: The integrated systems enable rapid early hazard detection and precise control of evacuation measures, maximizing safety in an emergency.
Optimal adaptation to versatile use: The solution is perfectly tailored to the arena's multifunctional requirements and provides maximum security for football matches, concerts, and other large-scale events.
Increased operational efficiency: Centralized control and the digital network simplify processes, shorten response times, and optimize system management.
Future-proofing and scalability: The modular system architecture allows for easy expansion and adaptation to future needs.
Enhanced image: The arena positions itself as a modern and safe venue, which strengthens visitor trust and increases its attractiveness for organizers.
The Red Bull Arena in Salzburg is the home stadium of FC Red Bull Salzburg and has a capacity of over 30,000 spectators per match, making it Austria's second-largest arena. Originally built between 2001 and 2003 with a capacity for 18,250 people, it was expanded from 2006 onwards for the European Championship.
