eMpulse Test Systems builds servo-electric test systems, which have emerged as a preferred alternative to servo-hydraulic systems. The company offers its customers much more precision and accuracy with up to four times greater frequency response plus energy savings of 80% or more compared to legacy servo-hydraulic equipment.
The challenge for eMpulse was to maximize the accuracy, responsiveness and reliability of its servo-electric testing systems. For this test system high quality motion control and automation technologies were required. In order to achive that, linear motors with well-integrated companion drives were needed to ensure high continous force ratings and broad test application capabilities. Also reliability, easy maintenance and minimal unplanned downtime were important design and engineering goals to ensure maximum asset utilization, uptime and availability for customers. 

The company choose Siemens as their strategic global partner for motion control and automation components due to their industry experience, integrated components and worldwide support. Siemens' wide range of hardware allowed the company to easily size their road simulators and seaMAST systems to customer requirements. The company integrated Siemens' SINAMICS S120 servo drives with their own servomotors and proprietary controller to achieve high performance, flexibility and precision. The Siemens drives and PROFINET connectivity provided high resolution position feedback and real-time monitoring for improved safety. SIMATIC controllers with integrated motion control and Safety Integrated functionality ensured the systems met SIL 2 and PL d safety standards. Finally, Siemens' TIA Portal software saved the company time and effort in programming and integrating their proprietary code with Siemens components. Overall, partnering with Siemens enabled the company to deliver unique, high-performance and safe test solutions to their customers.
