Soudal aimed to automate its internal logistics to safely transport heavy loads of up to 2.5 tonnes within its new production facility. The company wanted to improve safety and ergonomics by eliminating manual handling while supporting a more sustainable production process with reduced waste and energy use. In addition, Soudal required a scalable solution that could grow with future expansions and support multiple types of AGVs. Avoiding vendor lock-in was a key priority, which is why an open-standard approach was essential. Finally, the solution needed to integrate seamlessly with existing production systems, including the MES.
To meet these objectives, Siemens implemented SIMOVE Fleetmanager as a central platform to coordinate and control the AGV fleet. Custom-built AGVs for both powder and fluid transport were developed and deployed by Actemium Handling Solutions. The system was fully integrated with the MES, enabling automated and error-free task execution. By using the VDA 5050 open protocol, the solution allows different AGV types to operate within one unified system. Additional custom functionalities were developed to meet specific requirements, and the entire setup was aligned with the existing Siemens technology stack, including WinCC OA, PLCs and wireless communication systems.
“We don’t know what our automation needs will be ten years from now. But with SIMOVE, we’re ready.”
Jo Maes, Project Engineer at Soudal
The first four AGVs are already making a real impact at Soudal.
Improved safety and ergonomics, as manual movement of heavy containers is eliminated.
Fewer process errors, thanks to automatic task handling linked to the MES.
A scalable setup, where new AGVs can be integrated with limited rework.
Operational independence, supported by an open protocol and standard technology stack.
