The Siemens Gerätewerk Erlangen aimed to automate its pick-and-pack line to handle 600 to 1,000 daily shipments, each with diverse components and packaging options. The key challenges were to efficiently pack products into shipping cartons ("Tetris-in-the-Box") and intelligently fill gaps with protective material ("Block-and-Brace") without manual intervention, while optimizing material usage and minimizing CO2 emissions.
Siemens, in collaboration with Storopack, developed an AI-driven automated pick-and-pack line. This solution leverages Storopack's "Auto.Protect" system, which uses AI and a vision system to identify product positions and fill boxes with precise protective cushioning. The system automatically adapts to different product sizes, surfaces, and packaging needs. The project involved digital twins for simulation, collision detection, and generating training data for various AI algorithms. Robots are integrated into the automation via the SIMATIC Robot Library, with data processing running on SIMATIC IPC.
