Swire Coca-Cola Limited is the fifth largest bottling partner of The Coca-Cola Company by global volume with a franchise to manufacture, market and distribute products of The Coca-Cola Company in Greater China, Cambodia, Vietnam and the western USA.
Customer's original production line management system was very closed with high maintenance costs and difficult to change. And also, difficult to meet customer's cost reduction and efficiency improvement needs.
Customer expect to reduce energy consumption urgently in order to achieve their carbon reduction target promised by 2030, so they need to unify the linkage between energy management and production platforms of the group.
Siemens solution solves the contradiction between customers' high customization requirements and fast group large-scale promotion. Our solution is a cloud-edge collaborative architecture, with bottom-up methodology and customerized development on Siemens standardization platform (Simatic S7-1500+TIA Portal+WinCC (with PM Analyze) + Industry Edge with Siemens service).
Swire Coca-Cola and Siemens co-create a digital platform "MIS" (using Siemens standard WinCC+Edge) which is based on cloud-edge collaborative architecture and used for modular development. Currently, we have expanded MIS functions to MIS2.0 including production line management, energy management, equipment status monitoring, predictive maintenance, CCTV (Closed Circuit Television system)and in-line quality management etc.
We have fulfilled the promise we made two years ago. Till now MIS project total revenue is over 4.5M Euro, used WinCC+PM add-on software > 320 sets, IPC+IED > 53 sets, S7-1500 PLC > 40 sets, Scalance > 300 sets , 5G modules > 6 sets and so on. In addition, Swire Coca-Cola China Mainland and HK, Taiwan will deploy nearly 18 plants and 70 production lines in 2023, and will reach 26 plants and 97 production lines in FY24.
The energy management module in MIS2.0 enables customer to shift from analyzing reports afterwards to monitoring energy consumption in real time, identifying abnormal energy consumption points and alarming in real time. Through Meeting Mode, action plans are formulated in a timely manner, by combining with production operation data guiding frontline employees to optimize energy consumption points in supply chain,and achieving energy closed-loop management. The system helps to track real-time carbon consumption data and reduce plants & manufacturing
processes energy comsumption.
Challenges
Challenge 1:
OT&IT
gap. Our system is bringing OT and IT together – Data intelligence for data-driven decision making including both edge computing and cloud control tower, coordinating OT and IT is very difficult, we met so many IT competitors.
Challenge 2: Cross-region andfast group large-scale promotion. Digitalization project need fully engagement from both side, Swire Coca-Cola China team included Head office engineering, Continious Improvement, Quality, Production, IT, EHS, etc. Siemens included HQ teams GAM,TAM, VM F&B KAM, COC, BD, SFAE,PM,FA Edge SUP, FA Dig, AI, Cloud, PA,5G,ADV,Instrument, etc. And 5 parties participate jointly system blueprint design, included Swire Coca-Cola US, Swire Coca-Cola China, Coca-Cola US, Siemens HQ and Siemens China.
Challenge 3: Innovative technology without reference or template. Such as WinCC Add-on PM analyze, Edge app like energy manager/propam app are the first time appled in such a complex group-plant environment. Think big, start small, scale fast. Firstly, we conduct a pilot project and then quickly promote it to all plants of the group after success, and keep continuous improving, closed-loop iterating.
Make every effort to create certainty in the midst of uncertainty, drawing a stop for countless question marks. This also makes me more convinced that Siemens is a strategic partner that can work together for a long time.
In the process of cooperation and co-creation, the two teams not only appreciate each other, learn from each other, but also achieve mutual success. This not only creates a new digital benchmark in the beverage industry, but also helps the growth of both OT and IT digital talents.
The MIS system also plays an important role in identifying opportunities for improvement through digital visualization and analysis guidance. The combination of multiple forces creates subtle resonance, making our production efficiency Good to Great.
Both teams are working together to build an end-to-end green supply chain digital system, supporting Swire Coca- Cola's commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 70% by 2030 (within the range of 1&2 carbon emissions), and jointly pursuing a carbon neutral future. Digital system helped customer OEE（USLE：） productivity increased by 4.2 percentage points, ranking first in the global Coca-Cola system among more than 80 countries in 2022.
For a group with over 30 plants and over 100 production lines, it is equivalent to reducing investment in at least 4 production lines, with a value of 52 million Euro.
In terms of reducing energy consumption, Swire Coca-Cola has reduced overall system energy consumption by 8% in the past two years with continuous improvement, saving over 32 million kw/h of electricity, reducing carbon emissions by 20,000 tons.
