Gretna Grid Stability Plant
Sustainability
Customers in the power generation sector aim to enhance grid stability, efficiently integrate renewable energy, reduce environmental impact by transitioning to SF₆-free technologies, and also manage maintenance costs.
  • One HB3 switchgear with vacuum switching technology, integrated into a 60 MVA synchronous condenser substation as part of a greenfield project.
  • Rated voltage of 24 kV, rated operating current of 2000 A, and rated short-term current of 106 kA.
  • Indoor application.
  • IPB connection on generator and transformer side.
  • Features a "cradle-to-customer plus waste" (C2C + waste) philosophy, including 95% local sourcing of components within Europe and carbon offsetting for unavoidable emissions.
This collaboration between TSK and Siemens is truly groundbreaking. Stable carbon offset electricity networks are at the very foundation of a quality grid, and the capabilities provided by Siemens’ HB3 platform provide us with exactly what we need to ensure consistent, reliable power for the people of Scotland, and the wider United Kingdom.
Rubén Ondina, Project Director, TSK
  • Enhanced grid stability: Supports reliable integration of renewables.
  • Environmental sustainability: SF6-free operation reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Reduced carbon footprint: Achieved through local sourcing and carbon offsetting.
  • High reliability & low maintenance: Vacuum technology ensures long-term, dependable operation with minimal upkeep.
Gretna is a grid stability plant (specifically, a 60 MVA synchronous condenser substation) located in Gretna, Scotland, UK. Its primary purpose is to enhance grid stability by providing crucial short-circuit and inertia power, thereby supporting the increasing integration of renewable energy sources.
