Sustainability
  • Central plant operation management of 6 waterworks, 5 water hydro plants, 13 reservoirs and a multitude of pipe network stations
  • Early identification and elimination of the vulnerabilities as well as introduction of the long-term plant protection in terms of industrial security as per IT Security Law (KRITIS)
The Westphalia Waterworks GmbH relies on Siemens process control technology to ensure the quality and quantity of the drinking water supply for 1.5 million people in the Ruhr area. The central process control system enables a small service team to efficiently handle the comprehensive infrastructure.

  • Process control and automation technology SIMATIC PCS 7 (Multiclient project)
  • SIMATIC HMI, Panels & IPC
  • protection technology and circuit breakers by Siemens
  • converters by Siemens
  • Sivacon switchgear
  • Power units and pumps by Siemens AG
  • Industrial Communication Scalance
  • Security Assessment for network and system protecion
  • Simulation of the automation and process behaviour of a complete water treatment plant incl. distribution network based on SIMIT and the SIMIT Solutions Water Library (implemented in 2022), which will be utilized on further plants

For further large-scale plants, SIMIT will be used for project planning and operator training and will accelerate upcoming commissioning activities.
Project Lead at Waterworks Westfalen
  • Centralized plant management of six waterworks
  • Minimized risk error thanks to centralized process monitoring and control
  • Centralized one-man control system saves travel time and staff
  • all low and medium voltage facilities are observed and controlled directly by PCS 7
  • Drive ES for PCS 7 for linkage and development of the frequency converters
  • Clear and easy maintenance
  • Adaption of the infrastructure and implementation of modern IT-Security measures as per new IT security law (KRITIS)
  • The simulation software minimizes risks of failures upon updating of process control system and reduces commissioning time of further plants, also thanks to Operator Training System (integrated within SIMIT)
