Swissframe AG has made it its mission to
offer smart bathroom installations in a bid to massively reduce the renovation
and energy costs of apartment buildings and rental apartments. Working
alongside three universities of applied sciences, the bathroom solutions
company has developed a false wall system concealing a heat pump that revolutionises
the production of domestic hot water (DHW).
DHW production typically takes place
centrally in the basement, with the water distributed to the residential units.
This can lead to energy losses through the pipes of up to 50%. Collaborating
with the Bern University of Applied Sciences, bathroom solutions company
Swissframe has developed an innovative approach based on a SIMATIC control system,
in which all the apartment’s DHW is produced decentrally in its bathroom. The SIMATIC
S7-1200 is suitable for automation tasks in the low to medium output range –
even, thanks to its compact design, where space is limited.
The control system ensures that DHW
production is energy optimised and that residents always have sufficient hot
water. The system saves 70% energy compared to a conventional electric boiler.

Thanks to a web server integrated into the control system, service life and temperature curve data is conveniently available on site. This gives the developers useful feedback about the system and facilitates the work of service technicians when checking functions or resetting parameters. Should the control system be replaced by a successor at any point, the latter’s backwards compatibility means the same software could still be used.
