Sustainability
As one of the worlds largest drug manufacturers, Pfizer has to face and to master new challenges of today and tomorrow. New diseases require new medications and vaccines that have to be made available on the market as quickly as possible. The availability to patients worldwide in consistent quality, in sufficient quantity and for a affordable price has to be ensured - at any time. That´s why Pfizer is expanding the production capacities by building a new and digital high containment plant in Freiburg.
To ensure that the high-containment plant is not only extremely efficient, but also sustainable, Building Services from Siemens are monitoring and controlling the special containment concept and its innovative technologies. From power distribution in the building to automation, technologies from Siemens integrate the different disciplines, such as ventilation, air conditioning, and heating.
In addition, a combination of Desigo CC and SIMATIC WinCC enables that all production-related data can be exchanged between the production systems and the visualization system via the OPC UA industry standard. This data can be used in the central management system and accessed at any time from the individual production areas.
Because the data is linked and visualized in the Desigo CC management system, Pfizer’s new HighCon facility consumes about 40 percent less energy than traditional plants.
With this "state-of-the-art" Siemens solution Pfizer is now able to produce up to 12 billion units of drugs per year. Previously the maximal level of production was 5 billions per year.
"All machines and processes are intelligently networked using information and communication technologies, which enables the Pfizer plant in Freiburg to produce more flexibly, faster and with less resource consumption. The constructive cooperation in this project has once again confirmed and expanded the existing partnership that the Pfizer plant has maintained with Siemens for years."
