The Campbellford Wastewater Plant in Ontario aimed to improve clarifier sludge monitoring efficiency and accuracy. Operators previously relied on manual dipping tube checks three times per week, which was time-consuming and limited in providing real-time insights. The goal was to reduce manual labor, optimize sludge pumping schedules, and gain continuous monitoring capabilities for better operational control.

Siemens provided an innovative sludge detection system featuring: 

• Echomax XPS-15 ultrasonic transducer mounted on a movable arm to accommodate the rotating skimmer. 
• SITRANS LT500 controller for accurate sludge level readings and data logging.
• A unique installation approach allowing continuous measurement without interfering with clarifier operations. The system was tested in both primary and secondary clarifiers, comparing ultrasonic readings to manual measurements. Results showed nearly identical accuracy, validating the solution’s reliability.
