Maximum energy savings on Marchwood power plant
Electrical & Electronic (E&E)
Marchwood Power Ltd
A number of ongoing reliability issues associated to the pumps, motors and gearboxes of the main cooling water system posed a significant risk to the commercial operation of the Marchwood gas-fired combined cycle power plant. The aim was to improve the control and reliability of the gas-fired combined cycle power station.
Marchwood is a 840MW CCGT power station owned by
Marchwood Power Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between SSE and ESB international.
All of the electricity at the plant is sold under contract to SSE. Marchwood
began operating in December 2009 and is one of the most efficient gas-fired
power stations in the UK.
Installation of three 2.5 MW SINAMICS PERFECT HARMONY GH180 Drives
Installation of three 10-pole 2.1 MW SIMOTICS HV Motors
Removal of the existing motors and gearboxes
Installation and commissioning on-site
Integration into the existing DCS control system
Energy savings of 150,000 pounds per year
CO2 reduction has also been predicted to drop by 2,100 tonnes over the next year, leading to additional cost savings.
