The Electricity Works of the Canton of Zurich (EKZ) are responsible for a reliable energy supply and modern infrastructure solutions in the Canton of Zurich. As part of a future-oriented public lighting project, EKZ is collaborating with Siemens to implement innovative, energy-efficient, and intelligent lighting systems.
Objectives: EKZ must replace outdated broadcast receivers with modern digital tech smoothly, without interruption. The challenge: integrating new systems into existing infrastructure, managing ~3000 PLCs (twilight, streetlights, special functions). A modular, secure, centrally controllable, scalable, future-proof automation solution is needed for a sustainable, intelligent lighting infrastructure.

EKZ had to upgrade 3,000 PLCs to secure, scalable digital lighting via WinCC OA and TIA Portal integration.
Siemens leverages WinCC OA SCADA for EKZs complex project, controlling ~3000 PLCs (lighting, events). TIA Portal handles PLC programming. Secure OPC UA communication (GDS Push Tool) and a central project server ensure robust, scalable management. This creates a flexible, reliable, future-proof public lighting infrastructure.
