Queensland Aluminia Limited (QAL) is one of Australia's largest alumina refineries. In August 2018 they committed to a 5-Year Environment Strategy to ensure they improve their environmental performance.This improvement program is made up of both capital expenditure and culture change projects. As part of this improvement program, they were looking to move towards variable speed drive (VSD) technology to help reduce energy usage and emissions. An area that was identified as requiring upgrading was the Boiler Ash Pumps from direct online (DOL) to VSD controlled. QAL also wanted the abililty to have remote condition monitoring to enable proactive maintenance strategy and ensure reduced downtime.

Siemens provided two SINAMICS Perfect Harmony GH180 variable speed drives with built in transformers, IQ enabled to allow SIDRIVE IQ to be utilised. These were matched with 2 x 3.3kV 374kW Motors to offer a complete solution.
