The client aims to construct a digital substation, El Conde, to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and reliability in their electrical infrastructure.
The project involves implementing modular merging units. These units convert analog information into digital sampled values and process digital information according to IEC 61869-9 and IEC 61850-9-2 standards. The communication between units and control equipment is facilitated through redundant fiber optic channels and PRP redundancy to ensure reliable data transmission.
Implementing
the Siemens process bus in El Conde Substation enhanced reliability and safety,
reduced cabling, ensured interoperability, enabled real-time monitoring, and
improved cost efficiency. It also enhanced sustainability by improving energy
efficiency, reducing material use, and lowering the carbon footprint. It
optimized resources and extends equipment lifespan, contributing to a more
sustainable and efficient power system.
Enhanced reliability and safety: Siemens’ process bus
technology uses digital communications and fiber optics, which improve
system reliability and reduce the risk of electrical failures and short
circuits. Also the use of digital communications and fiber optics reduces
energy consumption compared to traditional copper wiring. This leads to
lower operational energy requirements and contributes to overall energy
efficiency.
Interoperability and flexibility: The process bus is designed according to the
IEC 61850 standard, facilitating interoperability between different
equipment and manufacturers.
Real-time monitoring and control: Data is transmitted in real time, enabling more
precise and faster monitoring and control of substation conditions. This
also reduces the need for maintenance trips, which in turn lowers the carbon
footprint associated with maintenance activities.
Cost efficiency: Over
time, the reduction in wiring and the improvement in operational efficiency
can lead to lower maintenance and operation costs.
Sustainability - reduced cabling: By replacing traditional copper cables with
fiber optics, the amount of necessary wiring is significantly reduced,
simplifying installation and maintenance; as well as reducing the
environmental impact associated with mining and processing these materials.
