Modernization of control center and Integration of Digital Twin  for Vienna Water Supply
Combined solution based on WinCC OA including COMOS allowing digital twin simulation

MA 31 - Wiener Wasser

Wiener Wasser - Vienna Water Supply
Vienna,
Austria
Sustainability
The municipal department 31 – Vienna Water – established and maintains more than 103.000 connected lines to provide fresh water for the Austrian capital. The water is delivered via two spring water mains coming from the Alps directly to the city of Vienna.

  • Digitalization of Vienna‘s water supply to provide the safest possible drinking water supply for the city
  • Standardization of the documentation throughout the network in order to gain a clearer and more transparent picture of the processes involved in the drinking water distribution system
  • Parallel operation of the old and new system to guarantee a smooth replacement of the control system
The new MA 31 control center produced by Siemens controls and monitors the Vienna water supply network as well as all plants and power plants along the First and Second Mountain Spring Pipelines. Thus, it is a significant step in the direction of a digitalized water supply.

  • A central data documentation with COMOS as well as a new labeling system for all plant components
  • Standardization of piping and instrumentation to gain an identical representation of all stations
  • Automation and reporting for maintenance
  • Control system set up with WinCC OA to perform better simulations

Together with SIEMENS the service integrator EDS 4.0 was responsible for creating this solution.
"The safe and managed supply of every household every time of the day as well as every time of the year delivering the most valuable food is the clear stated mission of the city. Modern standards of technology allow a higher level of safety. They also help to create supply processes much clearer and more transparent to each employee. The processes as well as the detailed know-how come to life by using digitalization”
Di Dr. Wolfgang Zerobin, CEO of MA 31
  • Central and consistent database for maintenance and repair as well as automation and reporting
  • Photo documentation and documentation of expert knowledge in a consistent database
  • Efficient process design and cost reduction due to the networking of data and information
  • High reliability

Launching the new control station has brought the City of Vienna a big step closer towards “Water 4.0”. Together with EDS 4.0 GmbH (European Digital Services) a digitalization project was designed and realized. Using the life-cycle-engineering Tool COMOS helped to integrate E&IC services* right from the start from planning to engineering phase and this enabled storage of plant data for further use by other applications and systems.
Vienna / Modern solution including digital twin for water supply: The Municipal Department Vienna Water supplies the Austrian capital with drinking water via the First and Second Mountain Spring Pipelines to Vienna. The water supply network comprises a length of 3,000 km as well as additional wells, high-level tanks and drinking water power plants.
