Turning, drilling, milling and grinding are essential processing steps in machining technology. They are usually carried out one after the other with several machine tools, which are typically equipped with various control system types. The result is a mix of different technologies and control generations. This setup is frequently encountered on shop floors and causes corresponding maintenance costs. To avoid this and to offer customers an efficient, integrated solution, machine manufacturer SEMA implemented an innovative application: All CNC processing steps are carried out via a single rotary system. This is made possible by the SINUMERIK ONE digital native CNC controller from Siemens, which supports continuous operation and integration of various technologies in a single machine.
High productivity for automotive manufacturing: The SEMA C-Series transfer machines are highly accurate, rotary cutting systems for large-volume processing. The SEMA MT-40-C allows components up to a cube size of 100 mm to be processed simultaneously on decoupled workpiece carriers at eight to 20 stations. The stations can be oriented horizontally or vertically, and the tool spindle can be moved in three axes. The workpiece itself can also be rotated on the C-axis on the workpiece carrier. The machine is loaded via an upstream automation cell. At the removal point, the finished workpiece is transferred to the subsequent automation cell. The production speed is enormous, a mere five to seven seconds per workpiece.
95 percent of the CNC users employ a control system with six to 15 axes, which is already the equivalent of a high-quality lathe and milling machine. As part of customer projects, we have now installed three SINUMERIK ONE control systems with up to 79 axes in one machine for the first time. The SEMA MT-40-C, which is equipped with this control solution, replaces up to 20 standard machines. This represents a significant technological leap forward. We are internationally at the forefront of this development and will be able to use the new control solution in all our machines.

With SINUMERIK ONE, the PLC cycle time, i.e. the frequency of the controller for reading in, processing and outputting the data, it is 20 times faster than previous solutions and only around six milliseconds. Furthermore, a much greater data volume is permitted per data set. This means that an essential customer requirement — the provision of as much data as possible on the produced workpiece, such as coolant temperature, feed rate, speed, grip pressure etc. — is fulfilled in a more comprehensive manner.
