The Datwyler Group is an industry specialist supplier and a world leader in the production of high-quality rubber elastomers for many different fields (Healthcare, Mobility, Oil & Gas and General Industry). As well, the company is characterized by an ongoing development, relying on 4 strategical key factors:
1. encouraging a profitable growth,
2. accelerating digitalization,
3. increasing business agility,
4. promoting sustainability

Dealing with the Business Unit Healthcare, where billions of crucial components for the pharmaceutical industry are produced, Datwyler needs to ensure a stable and uninterrupted process. A specific project was hence put into action, with the main purpose of connecting the PLCs of 30 molding machines in a fast and economical way, in order to access their performance data and to use it for future calculations.
The molding machine is the key element of production, as the rubber gets transformed here: if the vulcanization process fails, the product must be discarded and is no longer recoverable. This critical issue takes to the need for process control and data analysis in details, in order to guarantee high quality products.
The new implementations hence incorporate four core concepts:
  1. Local computing power, with a platform enabling independence and quickness in realization, high cyber-security level and integration in the global business architecture
  2. High flexibility of realization, with Apps both from Siemens and potentially developed on the inside, to be shared with other plants of the Datwyler Group in the future
  3. Centralized management based on a local architecture, to guarantee the compliance with company standards and to verify the connected machinery and the installed Apps
  4. Orientation to cloud systems, to profit from larger storage capacities and stronger computing power and to fully exploit the value of the collected data

To develop this cutting-edge project, the Siemens Industrial Edge was the only solution that best fulfilled the customer's expectations among the proposals on the market.
We had examined different suppliers of this technology, and Siemens presented us with the most complete, structured, flexible and ready-to-use ecosystem. For us, it was of vital importance to find a solution that could offer the possibility to work locally (Edge computing), in order to quickly obtain the first analytics results of the plant, as well as to have the future possibility to access to the benefits of cloud, to enlarge and strengthen the big data analysis.
Federico Urbani, Digitalization Team Leader, Datwyler Pharma Packaging Italy
All the activities, including the validation of the architecture at the hands of the IT-department, required less than 3 days of work, involving 2 internal resources. This commitment was able to put into service the apps for the historicization and visualization of availability, performance, diagnostic and process data of each machine.
The Datwyler Group is a world leader in the production of rubber elastomers for different sectors such as Healthcare, Mobility and Oil & Gas.
