Sustainability is the reason Biostoom Beringen exists. The Limburg biosteam plant processes 200,000 tonnes of waste annually and converts it into thermal energy through combustion. This energy goes to the nearby environment in the form of steam, hot water or electricity. To ensure that the entire process runs safely and efficiently, it relies on Siemens technology.
Fire safety ensures continuity. Special attention went to fire detection. Smoke detection cameras from Araani were added to the total concept from Siemens; they detect smoke at an early stage and thus play a crucial role in detecting possible fire incidents. A complete Siemens fire detection system safeguards the uptime of the installation.
Building information modeling (BIM): this model provides a three-dimensional, detailed representation of the
whole site and allows Biostoom to increase management and maintenance
efficiency. The production process is fully automated,
from waste reception right through to transportation of residuals for further
processing.
Other activities also
require little human intervention, such as feeding the incinerator, guiding the
combustion process, steam generation or monitoring emissions.
Additional camera technology also monitors irregularities within the general, logistic flow.
The advanced camera
technology goes beyond fire detection, it also keeps a careful eye on the
logistics flow and overall security.
Meanwhile, the Siemens’ smart
building management platform Desigo CC monitors the complete fire protection,
the CCTV-based security concept and the access control.
Since the ultimate
objective is to generate power with steam, Biostoom also wanted advice to optimize
the energy supply and management.
Siemens low-voltage power products enable exactly the right energy
distribution.
Thanks to the integrated concept from Siemens, we now have an additional virtual assistant who provides us with the right information at the right time.
