EYATH is the water & waste water utility of Thessaloniki, a city of over 1.000.000 inhabitants located in north Greece. A combined sewer network runs through the city and especially the historical city center and near the seaside. During heavy rainfalls several sewers overflow and major incidents of floods occur causing severe problems within the city. But even during dry seasons untreated waste water may spill to the sea or/and to other nearby water bodies, due to blockages which are formed by oil, fat, grease and other debris and cause the overflows. EYATH needs a way to monitor the extended sewer networks and prevent overflows and floods, keeping the water bodies clean and avoid penalties due to environmental pollution.

EYATH trusted Siemens Greece who suggested to use SIWA Blockage Predictor as a solution to their problem. They installed level radars LR110 at 11 manholes to supervise the level of sewage and connected them to local data loggers. The measured data is uploaded to Insights Hub (the industrial IoT Siemens suite) continuously where the sophisticated algorithm of SIWA Blockage Predictor analyzes the data using AI. With AI the application is taught the normal behaviour of each manhole taking also into consideration rainfall data from rain gauges within the city. With fuzzy logic the notifications of abnormal behaviour are classified into alerts or alarms giving to EYATH network services early notice of possible formation of blockage. A big challenge during the execution was to customize the app to EYATH's needs of everyday operations.

Using SIWA Blockage Predictor EYATH is able to get early notifications of forming blockages and take action soon enough to clean the sewers and avoid floods due to reduced capacity of the network. Now they have the knowledge to take specific action and clean those assets which have abnormal behaviour, saving costs for maintenance and increasing their performance.This way they protect the sea in front of the city and nearby water bodies from getting contaminated due to spills of waste water in the overflow pipelines. They keep the city clean and safe from severe flooding incidents.

The sewer networks of Thessaloniki are combined which means that both waste water and rain water run through the same network and during heavy rainfalls overflows cause pollution problems. EYATH has installed level radars at 11 manholes which have historically recorded several overflow incidents and deployed SIWA Bockage Predictor application to monitor possible formation of blockages using AI. This way EYATH can be notified early enough to prevent blockages and keep their sewers clean with maximum capacity.
