The challenge: Monitor and manage these intakes in a single control center. The solution was to install the Siemens Telecontrol Server Basic system, which allows all these intakes to be connected through mobile networks such as 4G or 5G, to a single central installation, where all that information is collected.

The Canal of Aragon comprises 350 water intakes distributed across its extensive irrigation network. A key challenge was the centralized monitoring and management of these intakes from a single control center. This was addressed through the deployment of a comprehensive Telecontrol system utilizing mobile communication networks. The system is designed to transmit only process-relevant data—such as flow rates and water levels—. In the event of communication loss, a full data backup in the S7-1200 based RTU ensures continuity and data integrity. All telemetry signals are routed to two regional control hubs, each responsible for managing  the five irrigation zones into which the Canal of Aragon is divided. These hubs are integrated with a SCADA control center based on WinCC V8, featuring full system redundancy. The solution enables geolocation of all intakes and real-time incident notifications via automated messaging. The entire project was engineered using the TIA Portal platform, significantly enhancing development efficiency. Additionally, 30 rugged tablet devices were deployed to provide mobile access to the application, enabling real-time decision-making from any location—an essential requirement specified by the client. Secure connectivity for these devices is ensured through SINEMA Remote Connect and SCALANCE M/MUM routers, fully compliant with NIS 2 directives on cybersecurity for critical infrastructure.
