The objective of the retrofit was to ensure that the systems met a high level of reliability under a range of conditions. The customer wished to optimize maintenance and increase efficiency, for example by achieving a rapid start-up following faults by means of faster fault localization.

Siemens supplied everything from a single source in the form of a control and visualization concept engineered entirely through the TIA Portal. This comprised SIMATIC S7, SIMATIC HMI Comfort Panels (19 inch), also using the SIPLUS RIC library software tool, as well as protection with the latest Siprotec systems.
In this project a strong focus was placed on the durability and reliability of the SIMATIC products and well as on the positive experience had with the durability of S5, which led to the customer opting for Siemens.

Rhaetian Railway AG (RhB) in Switzerland (Chur) employs 1500 people. RhB ensures smooth-running transportation services and punctual passenger transportation (www.rhb.ch). 15 stations and substations were modernized with SIMATIC S7 and SIMATIC HMI Comfort Panels and turned into an integrated automation solution for trouble-free rail operation.
