The customer operates two feed-water pump. Each pump is driven by a 13,5MW Siemens motor which is connected to a SIMOVERT S converter.

Since the existing SIMOVERT S series was discontinued in 2008 and replaced by a successor SINAMICS GL150 the supply of spare parts is already restricted.

That's why the customer wants Siemens to perform a suitable retrofit of their converters and thus ensure the availability of its plant.

The focus was on current modern technology, use of the structural conditions, short conversion times, reliable project planning, assembly and occupational safety and commissioning.

Siemens' retrofit solution included the configuring and preparing of two SINAMICS GL150. A team of Siemens Field Experts rendered the de-installation and commissioning of:

• 2x SINAMICS GL150 performance and customer-specific control cabinet with the new TP 1900 Comfort Display

• 2x SIMOTRAS HD excitation cabinet

• 2x modernization of the recooling system with ET-200/Profibus

The new converters were installed in the same e-room, only eight core drillings had to be done. The medium-voltage-, control- and process-control cables were reused according to the connections. The existing recooling system has been expanded temporarily, during the transport.

The Siemens Experts faced some challenges during the implementation:

• The customer needed special cabinets as well as a document approval process.
• Siemens Service experts had to handle the very tight time schedule.
• Belated delivery of relevant components to the respective plant.

The Rostock power plant is a coal-fired power plant on the eastern edge of the city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Rostock has an electrical output of 553 MW and can feed up to 150 MW of heat into the Rostock district heating network.
