Leading local systems integrator CET Energy Ltd. was contracted by Elektroprijenos BiH to refurbish protection and control gear by upgrading a data communication network in the Sarajevo substation for reliable power delivery while original substation continued to operate until the new system was up and running.   
The provision of reliable, quality power to the city’s industrial zones is critical to sustain Sarajevo’s growth which impacts the nation’s economy. This was enabled by building a highly robust network, tolerant to chronic outages, a redundant, fiber-based data communication network.   

Because previous technology upgrades had reached the end of their life, the outdated equipment had to be renewed for voltage stability and service reliability. Not only maintenance costs were growing but also the substation´s reliability had become an issue because there were too many malfunctions and constant demand for more energy. 

To ensure that new substation devices from different vendors are interoperated the substation had to comply with the global IEC 61850 standard.

Redundant, fiber-based data communication network supported by managed Ethernet switches from the Ruggedcom family. 

Tying together all protection and control devices within the substation and connecting the substation data network to operations center. 

Two parallel data networks using the Ruggedcom RSG2100 and Ruggedcom RS900 19” rack Layer 2 Ethernet switches. 

• Ruggedcom RSG2100, rugged, fully manged, modular switch monitors and transfers data to an onsite, redundant, human-machine interface, and to servers, connected to a wide area network (WAN). 
• The Ruggedcom RS900 switch is used for tight spaces with different fiber optic and copper ethernet ports. 
• Both switches exceed international standards for electrical substation operations. Their robust design enables them to withstand electromagnetic interference (EMI) that is endemic to power substations, as well as operate comfortably in temperature extremes of -40 degrees Celsius (-40 degrees Fahrenheit) to up to +85 degrees Celsius (185 degrees F.).
