Sustainability
The MDF production sector is one of the sectors with the highest energy consumption. The customer Starwood, an MDF manufacturer, was also looking for a way to reduce energy costs. For this reason, it was necessary to optimize the drive and automation systems in the melamine veneer presses. Starwood chose Siemens because of its extensive know-how in the field of energy efficiency.
As a result of the energy audit, Siemens service experts offered a retrofit solution for their melamine veneer presses. The scope of the retrofit project included the following products and services:
  • Supply and commissioning of Sinamics G120 (250 kW) cabinet
  • Supply and commissioning of press PLC and HMI program revisions
  • Performing necessary tests and controls for drivers, PLCs and SCADA system after application
  • Measurement of energy consumption and motor body temperatures before and after the application
  • Reporting the savings amounts specified in the feasibility report with measurements after implementation
  • Measurement and verification for an Energy Performance Contract
For the feasibility report, Siemens service experts conducted a detailed energy audit in accordance with ISO 50002. As a result of the feasibility report, an energy savings potential of 47% was determined and the payback time of the investment was 1.0 years.

Further benefits:
  • The new Sinamics series ensure spare parts availability and fast delivery
  • Increased plant availability, productivity and reduced unplanned downtime
  • 424.6 tons less CO2 emissions per year and 1,274 tree equivalents of environmental impact
