The Egyptian government wants to recultivate the northern Sinai Peninsula to make the country less dependent on agricultural imports.
To achieve this, water is to be pumped over a distance of 360 kilometers (roughly 220 miles) from the country's interior to the peninsula via 16 pump stations equipped with five to eight large pumps each.
Special soft starters for large medium-voltage motors with constant speed for pumps, compressors, etc. are necessary to protect the equipment and the downstream drive train.
