  • Creation of digital twin of their machines on several automation technologies S7-1500, 3rd party PLC, SIMIT, Fanuc and Yaskawa robots, NX MCD.
  • The challenge was to create a coupling in SIMIT to interconnect with 3rd party PLC in HiL/SiL.
  • Enable virtual commissioning phase to reduce travel and commissioning costs, simulate errors, accelerate production ramp up and train operators.
  • Simulation of the entire machine during engineering phases with PLCSIM Advanced / SIMIT / NX MCD.
  • Service & support in defining the adequate digital twin solution for all topologies of machines.
  • Interconnect 3rd party PLC with SIMIT & MCD: Co development of Ethernet IP (EIP) coupling between Michelin and Siemens teams.
  • Virtualisation of the engineering development workstations.
The simulation tools have been used in part of engineering for over 20 years. We had to modernize them, make them more modular and standardize them. This is what Michelin has undertaken with the Siemens teams in a spirit of teamwork, continuous improvements and collaboration. These tools are also attractive elements for our future machine designers.
Frederic Chaffraix, Director Manufacturing Engineering Performance (MEP), Michelin
Seamless simulation solution regardless of the PLC brands Siemens or 3rd party PLC
  • Main benefit for Michelin is to have a unique simulation system for all standardized PLCs  (Siemens / 3rd party).
  • Siemens digital twin solution is standardized within Michelin engineering team as part of their engineering milestones for the development of  new machines.
  • Technology and reactivity of the Siemens support Team in helping Michelin to develop machine digital twin.
Simulation of the entire machine during engineering phases
  • No requirements for hardware.
  • Significant reduction of the mechanical errors seen during engineering.
Reduce the engineering, commissioning, & training time
  • Mechanical and automation concept validation.
  • Validation of PLCs, drives and robots programs.
  • Modelling the behavior of the product manufactured.
  • Training of operators.
Validate the designs, mechanics, automation, communication interconnection and exchange between the various modules of tire production machines by creating a complete digital twin solution. Objectives for Digital Twin Solution
  • Functional concept validation
  • Presentation of new concepts to the project owner
  • Functional validation of new sub-assemblies
  • Virtual Commissioning. PLC program debugging
  • Operators, Maintenance people training
