The Smartron locomotive of Siemens Mobility is a streamlined and cost-effective solution designed primarily for freight transport. In 2023, Germany transported 197.6 million tons of goods via rail, with rail freight transport expected to become more crucial due to urbanization, population growth, and global trade. Siemens Mobility was looking for a reliable fire detection solution.
Siemens Mobility received customized plug-and-play fire detectors with SIL2 certification for simple connection with the cable harness. The detectors are ideal for tough engine room conditions because of their rough base. The fire detectors are directly connected with the Train Control and Management System (TCMS), therefore, there is no need for a separate fire control panel. These fire detectors collaborated to enhance fire safety across the rolling stock.
We delivered customized fire detectors for 100 units of the Smartron locomotive, which included plug-and-play multi-criteria and optical spot detectorswithrough base options. The primary challenge was meeting the high material demands and ensuring the system’s robustness in harsh environments.
The stand-alone concept eliminates the need for a separate fire control panel, reducing failure points and simplifying installation. It offers flexibility with multiple base options, allowing easy adaptation to different environments.
Everybody has a part to play in helping to improve sustainability,
especially when it comes to the transportation of goods, which accounts for 21% of global
CO2 emissions. Making transportation of goods safer contributes to a shift to making transportation a good option for shipping.
Siemens provided the fire detection solution for the Smartron locomotives of Siemens Mobility. They are constructed in different factories in Germany.
