• BSH was using motors in its DC (Direct Current) operated motor and drive system in a press shop. The customer was facing high maintenance costs and limited spare part availability. 
• As part of the product obsolescence checks in context with the Plant Maintenance Service contract, Siemens service experts identified that these motors were nearing the end of the commercial life.
• For this reason, any malfunction could lead to serious production losses since spare parts availability was critical. The customer wanted to avoid such risk and operate this machine with the latest technology improve availability and performance. 
• Therefore, BSH needed a service partner who could provide a suitable retrofit solution to enhance efficiency and to reduce unplanned downtimes and high maintenance cost. 
• Furthermore, the customer needed a partner who was able to perform the retrofit activities within a short time frame during normal shutdowns.

Siemens service experts proposed to turn the DC operated drive system into a more energy efficient AC operated system with a Variable-Frequency Drive (VFD) control. The implemented retrofit solution includes: 

• 2 x SIMOTICS M compact motors.
• 2 x SINAMICS G120 modular frequency converters.
